Lawn Care in Spring Hill, KS

Spring Hill is that stretch of country at the very bottom of the metro where Johnson County hands off to Miami County, strung along US-169 south of Olathe and Gardner. For years it was mostly farm ground and a quiet little downtown, and then the subdivisions started marching south. So when I pull up to a lawn in Spring Hill I never quite know what I'm going to get. Half the town is brand-new construction with thin sod over graded dirt, and the other half is an older home on a half-acre or a full acre that's been here since before the growth, sometimes on well water. Both come with their own lawn problems, and the treatment plan looks different for each.

What they share is the soil. This is heavy clay country, and out here it's some of the tightest I work in. On the new builds the machines pack the subsoil down until rain just sheets off instead of soaking in, and the good topsoil is long gone with the grading. On the established acreage lots the clay was never loosened to begin with, so the ground is dense all the way down. Either way, roots fight for every inch, and a lawn sitting on clay like that goes from swamp to concrete in the span of a week once summer sets in. Breaking that soil open is usually the single biggest thing we can do for a Spring Hill yard.

Almost everything I treat here is tall fescue, which is the right call for our Kansas City transition zone. Fescue takes our jump from muggy summers to hard winters better than any other grass. The catch in Spring Hill is how open and exposed these lots are. A lot of yards sit in full sun with young trees or no trees at all, and the wind comes right across the open ground, so the turf dries and bakes all summer long. That heat and bare soil is exactly what crabgrass and other summer weeds are waiting for, which is why a pre-emergent put down at the right time is so important out here.
