Grubs: the damage you don't see coming

White grubs — the larvae of Japanese beetles and masked chafers ("June bugs") — feed on grass roots just below the surface in late summer and fall. By the time you notice irregular brown patches that don't green up, spongy turf that pulls back like a rug, or skunks and raccoons digging up the yard at night, the roots are already gone. Preventive vs. curative — timing is the whole game

There are two different treatments for two different moments, and using the wrong one at the wrong time wastes money and lawn:

• Preventive (the smart default): applied in late spring to early summer, before eggs hatch. It stops the new generation of grubs before they can do any damage — the most reliable approach.
• Curative: applied in early fall when grubs are confirmed and actively feeding. It's a rescue treatment for an established population and needs to be watered in to reach the grubs.

If you've had grubs before, prevention in early summer is cheap insurance. If you're seeing damage right now in fall, you need the curative approach instead.

Fleas, ticks & chiggers — getting your yard back

Kansas City summers also bring the pests that make a yard miserable to use: fleas, ticks, and chiggers, especially along shady edges, tall grass, and where the lawn meets landscaping. A series of insecticide treatments through the season keeps these populations down so the kids and dogs can actually be outside. Most yards stay covered with treatments spaced across the summer.
