Why KC lawns need aeration and overseeding

Two local realities make this nearly mandatory in the Kansas City area. First, most yards sit on heavy clay that compacts over time, so water runs off instead of soaking in and roots struggle for air. Second, our most common grass — tall fescue — is a bunch grass that doesn't spread to fill bare spots, so every thin patch summer creates stays thin until you add seed. Aeration fixes the soil; overseeding fixes the density. Done together, they're far more effective than either alone.

What core aeration does

Core aeration pulls thousands of finger-sized soil plugs (about 2–3 inches deep) out of the lawn. That relieves compaction, opens channels for air, water, and fertilizer to reach the root zone, reduces thatch, and creates perfect pockets of exposed soil for new seed to germinate in. The plugs break down and return to the soil within a couple of weeks.

Timing is everything: early fall wins

For cool-season grass in Kansas City, the best window is early September through about mid-October. The soil is still warm from summer so seed germinates fast, but the cooling air protects young seedlings, rainfall is more reliable, and there's far less weed competition than in spring.
