Mowing Height for Fescue in Kansas City: How Tall to Cut

By KC Lawn Treatment Pros · Published October 12, 2026 · 6 min read
Tall fescue lawn in Kansas City cut at a healthy height

If I could change one habit in Kansas City yards, it wouldn't be the fertilizer or the watering. It'd be the mower deck. Most fescue lawns I see are cut too short, and it quietly causes a long list of problems: thin turf, more crabgrass, more brown patch, and a lawn that cooks in July. The fix costs nothing. You just raise the deck and mow a little differently.

The short answer for tall fescue

Tall fescue is the backbone of most KC lawns, and it does best at 3.5 to 4 inches. Not 2. Not "golf course." Taller blades mean deeper roots, more shade over the soil, and less room for weed seeds to sprout. If your mower has numbered settings, find the one that measures out to roughly four inches on a flat driveway, then use that all year with small tweaks.

The one-third rule

Never remove more than a third of the blade in one mow. At a 4 inch height, that means cutting when the grass hits about 6 inches. If you let it get away from you after a rainy week, don't chop it all at once. Take it down in two passes a few days apart. Cutting too much at once shocks the plant, and the roots pull back to compensate.

Sharp blades matter more than you'd think

A dull blade tears grass instead of slicing it. You'll see frayed, whitish tips a day after mowing, and those ragged wounds are an open door for disease. In our humid summers that includes brown patch and dollar spot. Sharpen the blade at least once a season, more if you mow a big yard. Also try not to mow when the grass is wet, since it clumps and spreads fungus from patch to patch.

The bottom line: mow tall fescue at 3.5 to 4 inches, go a bit higher in summer, never take more than a third at a time, and keep the blade sharp. It's the cheapest lawn upgrade there is.

What cutting short really costs you

Scalped turf lets sunlight hit the soil, and that's exactly what crabgrass seed is waiting for. It also shortens the root system, so the lawn needs more water and recovers slower from stress. Taller grass crowds out weeds on its own, which makes weed control and fertilizer treatments work better, because you're not fighting an open, thin lawn. And leave the clippings. They break down fast and return nutrients, as long as you aren't mowing wet or cutting off huge amounts.
